Bringing Mental Wellness Conversations Back to the Barbershop
For generations, barbershops have been more than places to get a haircut. They have served as gathering spaces where community members share experiences, exchange advice, build friendships, and find guidance.
The Barbershop Talk Program continues this tradition by transforming familiar community spaces into welcoming environments for meaningful conversations about mental health.
Through this initiative, Future Wellness Foundation encourages men to speak openly, support one another, and recognize the importance of prioritizing emotional well-being.
As part of the foundation's ongoing events, workshops, and community programs, Barbershop Talk helps expand access to mental health education and meaningful community connections.
What Participants Can Expect
Barbershop Talk is not a traditional lecture. It is an interactive community conversation facilitated by a licensed therapist.
Participants will have opportunities to explore important mental wellness topics, share experiences, and learn practical coping strategies.
Mental Wellness Topics May Include
Anxiety and Stress Management
Grief and Loss
Self-Esteem and Identity
Relationships and Communication
Navigating Depression
These conversations support the foundation's broader efforts to promote emotional awareness, resilience, and stronger community relationships.
A Community-Centered Experience
Mindful Moments
Each session begins with grounding exercises that encourage reflection, establish a supportive atmosphere, and help participants feel comfortable engaging in meaningful conversations.
Community Connection
Participants connect through introductions, shared experiences, and open dialogue, creating opportunities to build trust and strengthen relationships.
Expert Facilitation
A licensed therapist guides discussions, offering professional insights and practical coping strategies to help participants better understand and manage mental wellness challenges.
Bringing Generations Together
Open to participants ages 14 and older, the workshop creates opportunities for intergenerational conversations, mentorship, and shared learning.
By bringing together younger and older generations, Barbershop Talk encourages understanding, connection, and stronger community relationships.
The program recognizes that conversations about mental health can help strengthen not only individuals but also families and entire communities.
Building on Previous Barbershop Talk Events
The upcoming Bowie gathering follows previous Barbershop Talk initiatives, including the September 27, 2026, event at Denny Moe's Superstar Barbershop in Harlem, New York.
The Harlem gathering brought conversations about Black men's mental wellness into a familiar neighborhood setting, highlighting the importance of culturally responsive support, community connection, and open dialogue.
Barbershop Talk Harlem Featured in Harlem World Magazine
The foundation's work received coverage in Harlem World Magazine, which highlighted the Barbershop Talk Harlem initiative and its efforts to challenge mental health stigma among Black men and boys.
